Team Preview:

A lot of teams would be stoked to have a 6-5 season. More wins on the left than the right is better no matter how you look at it, right?

Not if you are a Capital Eagle.

Capital has a long tradition of winning. It’s been close to a decade and a half since they’ve had a losing record. In fact, from 2010 to 2014 they averaged 2.4 losses per season with a lot of those coming during state tournament play.

Then came the 2015 football season.

The Eagles final loss, a season ending 42-14 blow-out in the state tournament quarter-finals to Mt View, ended a football season Capital doesn’t want to repeat any time soon.

Fortunately, Capital didn’t lose a lot of pieces from last year. Even though they will be without record setting receiver Sam Brixey and offensive lineman Jacon Molenaar, who signed at Idaho State, Coach Todd Simis returns an experienced, senior laden, squad in his 13th season as Capital’s head coach.

Quarterback Drew Korf (2nd Team All-Conference) will be back under center as will running backs Micah Hagler and Kyler Larson. Throw in two sure-handed wide receivers like Jessie Healey and Alex Lindsey, Cam Godney and Harrison Ashby at tight end and couple of offensive linemen like Elliott Henry and Drake Reay and you have a pretty talented group of football players.

Behind the arm of Korf, Capital will no doubt run a no huddle offense but make no mistake - just because the offense is playing fast does not mean they will shy away from the run game. One of Coach Simis’ goals this year is to improve the consistency of the running game. Expect both Hagler and Larson to have a big year at running back.

The Eagles were a fairly young team on defense last season and it cost them against the big name, explosive offense, schools: Madison, Borah, Rocky Mountain and two losses to Mountain View. In each of those losses, the Eagles gave up 42 or more points. The young and inexperienced defense of 2015 has to come back as the seasoned and experienced defense in 2016. That’s where there’s more good news for Capital fans.

Returning to the defensive line are Ethan Petzinger and Conner Sweeney, both seniors.
Returning to the line backing corps is Mason Wray and Josh Eden, both seniors.
Returning to the secondary is Tim Neumeyer and Carter Johnson, both seniors.

See a pattern?

Now, add in the fact that Capital also returns juniors Carter Johnson at defensive back, Jordan Godeny at safety and Keagan McCoy on the defensive line, and you have the makings one of the most experienced, and potentially dominating, defenses in the state.

The test comes early as Capital has a pretty stacked four weeks in a row to open the season playing Borah, Rocky Mountain and Timberline at Dona Larsen Park and Highland in Pocatello at Holt Arena. All four games are scheduled to be web cast live, and free, on
