Team Preview

Written by: Sven Alskog

It's all fresh this season in Murtaugh for the Lady Red Devils on the hardwood.

After a year hiatus at the varsity level, first year Head Coach Adam Johnson steps in ready to see what his group of seven players has to offer.

Basically everything is an unknown for Murtaugh this season, with none of the players having any varsity experience, meaning the most important thing really for this team is simply to get on the court again and set the tone for the future of the program.

"We are excited to get back to competing at a varsity level. We do not have any seniors on our team this season, so we are approaching the season with long term goals and realize that our youth gives us an opportunity to build a strong foundation for a quality program."

Johnson does have some athletes at his disposal, but he wants to see improvement in non-fast break situations offensively.

"We need to focus on efficiency in our half-court offensive sets. We need to develop an ability to control the ball offensively and take the shots that we want within our offense."

He is happy with what they can do in the open floor though.

"Our team offensive strengths are speed, aggressiveness and equal opportunity mentality. We should be able to push the tempo defensively and convert turnovers into offensive opportunities in transition."

The half-court focus translates right back over to defense, as Murtaugh is going to have to be prepared to battle in what is a physical conference on a yearly basis.

Johnson wants to see strong defensive rebounding that helps to limit opponent opportunities per possession.

Regardless of what happens in the wins and losses columns this season for the Lady Red Devils, the campaign will be seen as a success in regards to getting the program back up and running at the varsity level.
