Team Preview

A heartbreaker in a 52-50 semifinal loss to Bishop Kelly last season left a bad taste in the mouth for the Minico Spartans.

Unfortunately for a group of six seniors, that bad taste will be the last one they have of their high school basketball careers, although there was enough success over the four years to offset how close they came in the 2016 tournament.

Replacing that group will be a large task for new Head Coach Anna Bateman.

Second Team All-State shooting guard Jilian Gilchrist is going to have to add even more productivity on the offensive end to keep the points coming in for the Spartans, something she should have no problem doing.

Point guard Tayla Sayer and post Brinley Stutzmen are the other two key returners.

Sophomore Tayla Stimpson adds depth to the guard line as a newcomer.

A lack of size might make things difficult down low, however speed can help offset that to a certain extent, which is something Minico will need to have happen.

There are two major elements that will be the staple of the Spartan defense.

"Overall team quickness and speed. The quickness and speed allow us to try a variety of defenses," said Bateman.

She mentioned improving the rebounding due to being undersized as a key focus area.

Offensively a lot of the success will come from simply building a rapport between the five on the floor at any given time.

"We lost six seniors last year with a ton of playing experience," said Bateman. "How this year's team gels and comes together is vital."

Opponents can expect to see an up-tempo team on both ends of the floor that wants to get into a running match of sorts on a nightly basis. The style should lead to a fun team to watch that once again competes in the conference, potentially leading to a return trip to the state tournament.
