Much like the football team this season, Valley now has to replace all kinds of key players as the Vikings head into the new basketball campaign.

Seven seniors have graduated, including three who played four years of varsity basketball.

A new senior class of four integral pieces steps into the leadership role. That group is led by interior players Mike Elorietta and Bryce Tverdy, along with wings Jamin Fenton and Tim Carlquist.

With the change of guard at the top of the roster, fifth year Head Coach Brian Hardy knows finding a team leader is a must.

"We must have a senior or possibly an underclassman step up and provide the right kind of leadership and set the tone for us to have a successful season."

Offensively the Vikings have some good options from the inside-out.

"We share the ball well and have some guys that want to set up teammates for great shots instead of just good ones," said Hardy.

He mentioned taking care of the ball better and limiting empty possessions as areas of focus in the offseason.

On the other end of the floor stopping the ball from getting into the lane is paramount, with not a ton of size on the floor for Valley.

"We will have some quickness and good hands," said Hardy. "We have to get a lot of deflections in order to disrupt the opposition."

That feeds right into the need to keep the ball from being advanced inside as often as possible.

"Our guards have to be able to stop dribble penetration and keep guys in front of us. Our entire team will need to help out and finish defensive possessions by securing the rebound."

One way or another Hardy is excited about the group he has this year and the potential that exists within the roster.

"I am really looking forward to coaching a bunch of young, hungry players that have enthusiasm and can’t wait to play varsity basketball."
