Rome wasn’t built in a day.

The phrase was first mentioned as a French proverb back in the late 1100’s. Simply put, it means ‘important work takes time’.
Howard Hart understands that completely.

The second year head coach at Idaho Falls High School is building the foundation of success for Tigers basketball. Slowly, but surely, the results will come.

After taking over a program that had won four games from 2012-2014, Idaho Falls improved to six wins last season. And Hart hopes that they can continue their steady progression again this year.

“We have great young men to work with,” he said. “They are very team oriented – but for us to be successful this year, it’s going to depend on how quickly our team can grow and develop.”

That growth may be painful at the start as the Tigers break in eight new players to the varsity squad, having graduated key contributors in Connor Cammack, Zach Bowser, Chase Peterson, and Holden Jones.

Back in the fold this year are returnees Sawyer Storms and Brenden Resendez. Storms has the ability to play inside and out, while Resendez has a motor that just won’t stop. They will be the leaders of the Tigers this year.

Offensively, Hart is looking for just one thing.

“Consistency,” he said. “I just want our team to be consistent in our motion offense.”

Defensively, he says he’s not worried about the effort put forth by his team.

“The kids work extremely hard defensively,” he said. “If we can improve on our help defense, our rebounding, and being willing to pressure the opponents, we will have a good year.”

Their schedule isn’t easy. Along with the likes of Highland, Madison, and Hillcrest in their conference, Idaho Falls will also play host to two District III teams in Rocky Mountain and Mountain View, while taking on perennial 4A state contenders in Rigby and Twin Falls twice.

Spirits are high surrounding the Idaho Falls program and Hart hopes the hard work put in by his team will continue to build the program from the ground up. After all, anything worth having takes hard work.
