For Melba, the objectives are clear: win a third straight district championship.

And Melba has the horses (pardon the pun) to do it after finishing 17-7 last season. The Mustangs have two all-conference returnees in junior point guard Nick Fitts and senior forward Trey Trappett. Center Devin Edmiston, also a senior, returns, as does senior guard Tyson Christensen and sophomore guard Justin Trappett. There is a group of juniors and seniors coming up as well that will make this team pretty deep.

Offensively the Mustangs should be able to run. They have good quickness, and Fitts and Trey Trappett are good scorers that can provide an inside-outside tandem. As long as they stay under control they should be able to move up and down the court quickly and efficiently this season.

Defensively, the key is to be active and keep opposing offenses on their toes. Melba isn’t the biggest team, so rebounding could be a bit of a challenge, but good on-ball pressure and aggressive defense should pay dividends.

Longtime coach Bob Lenz really likes this group of players and says they can have special chemistry this season as they go for the district three-peat. Playing well on the road will be key to whichever team wins this district, which is one of the more competitive ones in the state.
