Replacing exiting talent is always difficult. When the graduated talent includes what was the number one player in the state from last season, that challenge is magnified even more.

That is the task second year Century Head Coach Lester Stewart faces this season after losing star swingman Malek Harwell, a First Team All-Idaho selection who is now at Boise State. Harwell wasn’t the only loss, as guard Leo Behrend is also gone.

“We will miss Malek’s competitive nature and leadership and Leo’s ability to rebound and play perimeter defense, as well as his scoring,” said Stewart.

The new faces bring two main things to the Snake Pit this season; height and youth.

“Our youth and height excites me,” added Stewart. “When you have young guys who all want to achieve the same goal and are willing to learn and work together it’s very exciting.”

Parker Williams, a junior post, will step into a role down-low alongside Zach Hearn.

“We look to become better at offensive rebounding with the height of Hearn (6’6”) and Parker Williams (6’5”). Also, we are looking to improve our patience with our shot selection and getting more out of our secondary break,” said Stewart.

Another Harwell, Deshun, will also look to help solidify the backcourt for the Diamondbacks. The freshman is joined by Tucker Hough and Sheldon Honena-Edmo on the wing.

“Hough and Honena-Edmo make up a solid backcourt,” stated Stewart. “Tucker’s playmaking ability will help create a lot of offense for our post players and shooters. Sheldon’s shooting ability is by far some of the best in the state. He’s able to knock down the 3 contested or not, as well as pull-up jump shots.”

Defensively, the size and speed should make things difficult for the opposition.

“Our length and athleticism will be two big strengths for us. We want to focus on keeping the ball out of the paint.”

Sherrod Baldwin, a former Idaho State University guard, will step into an assistant position this year for Stewart and look to help bring to life the vision of what the size and speed can become on the defensive end. Even with their losses, the Diamondbacks should make some noise in the 4A District 5-6 this season.
