In the Great Basin conference, it is usually the same old pecking order when it comes to boys basketball. However, with each passing season, the Canyon Ridge boys basketball team gets better and better and comes close to pulling off the upset that throws the wrench into conference standings.

Jacoby Fox, in his 5th season, will once again look to get those signature wins for a program that has battled every team in the conference.

In order to be relevant this year, the Riverhawks will need some big play from returners Drew Schwarz and Cole Hunt. These two will be asked to shoulder the bulk of the load both offensively and defensively. Sophomore newcomers Derek Clark and Izak Cuellar will also be asked to contribute as young players to a team who went 8-13 last season with not very many conference wins on its resume.

Fox likes to play man to man defense, a staple of his tenure at Canyon Ridge. This year, he hopes to be able to mix things up just a bit more.

“We prefer to play man to man defense but we want to be able to use more zone looks this season,” says Fox.

Turnovers will be a point of emphasis for the Canyon Ridge boys this season as they have had a propensity for giving away possessions which lead to easy baskets for the opposition. Fox knows this and hopes that this year’s crew is able to focus on ball security and value every possession.

Games to watch: The Canyon Ridge Riverhawks have never beaten the Twin Falls Bruins, but every time they play the atmosphere is electric. The first matchup between these two teams this season will be January 8 at Twin Falls High School.
