Team Preview

Written by: Ty Hawkins

First-year Head Coach Julia Fishman inherited a team that struggled with fundamentals of basketball last season. However, the team continued to work and got better, and from what she can tell so far she’s been pleased with the progress her team has shown.

“Last year, we were fundamentally focused and this year we are moving past the fundamentals and into the instinctive nature of the sport,” Fishman said.

Riverstone’s basketball team is fairly new and this season is a continuation of the “learning” season they had last year, where they focused on the basics of basketball. They hope to move away from coaching fundamentals and implementing a more advanced game, one similar to that in college, where they are can work on communication on the court and improvising successfully.

“The most impressive part about this team is that each girl leaves the court a little better at basketball than they were when they arrived,” Fishman said. “That shows dedication and a perseverance to improve themselves, and that makes coaching them so much easier and that much more fun.”

Offensively Fishman likes Riverstone’s movement, and the ability to transition between positions. Yet, she feels the team still needs to continue to work on taking and making the open shot, and capitalizing on fast break opportunities. Fishman believes the team respects and believes in each other regardless of ability, but she wants to see them continue to build individually as well.

“I want each player to feel confident on the court and take the open shot without thinking,” Fishman said.
Defensively, she wants the girls to focus on not getting beat off of the dribble, staying tough on man to man defense, and rebounding.

Fishman admits Riverstone may not have the biggest, strongest, or fastest team, but what makes them competitive is their ability to handle adversity and overcome.

It also doesn’t hurt that they have senior returners Trina Collins and Mackenzie Roan. Add juniors Cat Carignan and Tiara Wallace and have enough varsity experience that should help win some games.
