After making it into the state tournament for the first time since 2006, expectations will be high this year at Parma. Even though the Panthers lost both games at state, head coach Kevin Sitts said the success has fueled the fire for this season.

“I’ve never had a team work so hard in the summer,” Sitts said. “It’s what makes me so excited – hopefully it payoffs.”

The Panthers return seven varsity players, including three starters. Junior point guard Tanner Kramer had 36 points in two games at state. “He’s put a ton of time in at the gym this off season and we’re expecting a lot from him,” Sitt’s said.

Senior wing/guard Elijah Larson is in his third year on varsity. Sitts said last year Larson tended “to put a lot of pressure on himself” and “this year he understands his role better.” He expects the athletic wing to be more of an offensive threat as a shooter and a penetrator.

Senior Post Tanner Jennings (6-foot-3) can defend all positions and works hard on defense. Senior post Parker Lewis (6-foot-6), played JV and played varsity at state. Sitts said he spent all summer lifting weights and gained 25-pounds of muscle. “He can be a difference maker,” Sitts said.

Sitts also expects improvement from hard working junior post Cole Merges (6-foot-4), senior wing Kyle Myers and junior guard Enrique Gutierrez, who played for varsity and junior varsity last year.

Unlike most other teams in the 3A Snake River Valley Conference, the Panthers have a good blend of guard and post play. Sitts wants to play up tempo and take advantage of the height and athleticism.

“It’s going to be a different team this year. Last year we slowed it down,” Sitts said. “This year we’re going to put up 60-70 shots a game. We’ve got some tall guys but they’re slim and we’re going to push it down the court.”

Top to bottom with Homedale, Fruitland, new kid Emmett and Parma, the SRV could be the best conference in Idaho.

“I think league is going to be a lot tougher, but I think the Panthers are going to be a lot tougher. I usually have eight to nine players and this year I have 12. We have a lot of depth. All around, I have a players at every position,” Sitts said. “I’ve got a good team, but the whole conference is going to be tough. So you never know what could be happen.”
