The Horseshoe Bend Mustangs are going to crank up the defensive pressure this season. Coming off a 12-win season and with four returning starters, the Mustangs are hoping to take a big step forward by making a transition from the school’s traditional zone defense to man-to-man.

“We’re not very big so we have to run and run and run,” assistant coach Casey Wilbur said. “We have a lot of kids that are really quick, former football players. We are working hard at practice and the kids are seeing it work and I think since they are seeing it being be successful. I think they are going to jump on board.

The Mustangs will be led by senior point guard Manny Sancho and senior shooting guard Forrest Renfro. Described as athletic, Sancho has been on varsity for a couple of season and “knows the ropes.” Wilbur is hoping an improved shot will take Sancho to the next level this year.

Renfro – the leading returning scorer – is expected to lead the way on offense and his speed should help on the trap and press. “He has been in gym and weight room working hard all off season. We’re going to look at him to score quite a bit for us,” Wilbur said of Renfro.

Senior shooting guard Blake Miller and senior center Ian Dhuyvetter (6-foot-2) should also bring more scoring punch and athleticism. Both will be key in the transition to up-temp style.

Junior guard Kyle Jones – the leading junior varsity scorer his freshman year – is back after a season away from the school. He is expected to be a bigger contributor as season goes along and gels with the team. The Mustangs are also counting on an immediate contribution from freshman point guard Gavin Miller.

The Mustangs are making the conference switch from the Long Pin to the Western Idaho. The latter is chalk full of the district’s top teams. Ambrose returns several starters from a squad that was runner-up at state last year. Tim Dranginis returns to Notus with a team full of returning, experienced talent and Liberty Charter is “well coached” and will contend at districts for a spot to state.

The Mustangs are hoping to jump into that top group. They will certainly be underdogs in the eyes of pundits. But they certainly aren’t selling themselves short.

“Expectations are pretty high,” said Wilbur. “Obviously we’re going to have it tough with Ambrose and Liberty Charter. But our expectations are pretty high. We have a lot of seniors and we have some young players coming up that can provide depth. We feel like we should compete with the best teams in the conference.”
