While the Filer girls basketball team was on their way to a state title, the boys team was having a strong year themselves, advancing to the state tournament and winning a pair of games.

The Wildcats went 17-11 last season, knocking off Snake River and Kellogg at Meridian High School during the state tournament on their way to a second consecutive third place finish.

Connor Tews, Cooper Moon, Peyton Richardson and Braydon Jasper all return looking to bring Filer home a state championship for the first time in school history.

The style of play that the Wildcats employ is a stark contrast to many of the other teams they play throughout the season.

Filer plays plenty of 4A and 2A schools throughout their schedule to try to fill in the gaps left as a result of being in a small conference consisting of just Kimberly, Buhl (defending state champions) and Gooding.

Buhl lost Kasey Crossland to injury for the year during a football game to Shelley in November, a difficult loss which will make it difficult for the Indians to repeat this season.

Both Filer and Buhl should again be the teams everyone else is chasing within conference play.

Bryar Jones, Alec Simental, Parker Clifford, Caden Keopnick and Zach Sharp are all newcomers for the Wildcats who will be looking to propel Filer to a regular season conference title.

5th year Head Coach Allen Kelsey expects his squad to have a good mix of guard and post play with enough size to challenge bigger teams.

Filer will rely on a slower tempo on offense in an effort to throw off the rhythm of the opposition, forcing them to play a style much different than is typically played in south-central Idaho throughout the season.

On the other end the Wildcats will avoid sticking to one defense throughout games, consistently mixing up the defenses to confuse their opponents.

The style of basketball in which Filer plays requires the team to remain disciplined in order to avoid costly turnovers which would lead to easy points the other way.

Taking smart shots and making safe passes is the name of the game on the offensive end to help avoid these problems, while defensively the Wildcats are expected to be strong again.

With some key players gone from the state title team for Buhl last season this might be the year that Filer jumps into the driver’s seat in league play.
