As a team, what are your offensive strengths?
As a team our offensive strengths will be our size and inside game with Bailey Magdaleno and Micaela Hulsey. However, we have always been an up-tempo program that tries to utilize our athleticism. We like to use our speed and athleticism to advance the ball quickly up the floor and put a lot of pressure on defenses. This year should be no different.

Offensive areas you hope to improve on over last year:
: We have plenty to improve on offensively. We are never satisfied with how we did before. Our goal is to become better shooters, execute more efficiently, and reduce our turnovers.

As a team, what are your defensive strengths?
We are primarily a pressing man-to-man team. Most games we come out of the locker room with the mind-set that we defend full-court every possession. Our players are used to that idea and it comes naturally to them now.

Defensive Areas you hope to improve on over last year:
One of our yearly goals is to win the rebounding edge in every game. We practice daily on being a good defensive team that prides itself on not giving the other team a second shot. So, this year we need to be a better defensive rebounding team and become better defensive communicators.

Does your team have a motto/theme for the upcoming season?
? Nothing official but I’m going into this year with the idea that we are reloading. I have only 3 returning players with Varsity experience and one of them (Hulsey) didn’t play the last month due to an ankle injury that later required surgery. So, we really do need to reload and some girls are going to be pushed to step up, take charge. Most of these girls haven’t played varsity before and those who did really weren’t expected to contribute much offensively. It will be fun to see who steps up and takes on the role of being a leader on this team.

What are you most excited about in regards to this year’s team?
? I’m most excited to see how this young and inexperienced team comes along. I think a lot of people are going to look at us and say, “Well, Liberty Charter is going to be down. They have no one coming back.” I love that kind of nay-saying. It challenges and motivates me, and I will use that to motivate the girls.

What is the ‘X-Factor’ to having success this season as a team?
I always think the x-factor is injuries. Last year we battled sickness and injuries throughout the season. After the first couple of weeks we didn’t have a full-squad at practice one time the rest of the year. That was really a challenge for us, and we won’t be very deep this year so we can’t afford injuries to key contributors.

Besides the pay, the fame and the glory, why do you coach high school basketball?
? I get tremendous satisfaction out of seeing young people learn great life lessons that come from both winning and losing. Character, attitude, and work ethic are developed by playing athletics and through winning and losing.

What makes your school the best place to coach for?
We have the best, most supportive governing board and administration. Our parents fully support everything we as coaches do to push their child to be successful. Our students are a blessing to coach. They have great attitudes and put forth tremendous effort, the kinds of things that make for success as a grown-up. We expect that, and they deliver.
