There isn’t much question that the quarterback position in football is the engine that keeps the offense going.

For the 2018 Boise Braves, the hope is that incoming varsity quarterback Carson Bohning can make a major impact for a team which will look to the air early and often in games.

Having Bohning under center should allow the Braves offensive coaching staff to utilize the talents of Carson Jones from the receiver position.

While there are some skill pieces in place, including Jack Molesworth at running back, there is still plenty of work to do for an offensive unit which scored more than 17 points just once last season.

The Braves success in 5A SIC play will come down in large part to line play.

“The most important players I consider go somewhat nameless - the lineman of the opposition. That is who we have to deal with most directly. Everyone is bigger than we are, so that is the key. How can we compete weekly within that context? The great players everyone knows, and every school has at least one,” said Boise head coach Jerry O’Mahony.

Another major focus for the Braves has to be the turnover margin, which was at -15 last season, the worst in the 5A SIC.

This will go back in a large way to the decision-making of the new quarterback in Bohning. If he is able to make good decisions with the football it can change the complexion of things for Boise.

Defensively the unit will again have its hands full against a high-powered group of offensive oppositions. Jones mans one of the corners, with Molesworth at safety, Second Team All-Conference defensive end Alex Ojukwu on the line and Andrew Bergey the man in the middle at linebacker.

On both sides of the ball, O’Mahony likes the mental side of what he has at his disposal.

“I really like the mindset. Very aggressive group. They trust the system. Just need to continue to make gains in strength and numbers.”

The Braves start the 2018 season with a Thursday night battle on August 23 against Centennial at Dona Larsen Park.
