Council had to cancel the first two games of the 2017 football season due to a roster shortage stemming from academically ineligible players, however after that the Lumberjacks should remain a competitive program in the Long Pin Conference.

Entering his 18th season as head coach at Council, Dan Shumway again has a good core group of talent, with it all starting at the quarterback position in senior Brett Rosengrant.

A great backfield option exists as well with senior running back Emmit Hileman, who is complimented by a receiver core led by First Team All-Conference talent Lance Nichols.

"We should have a very good passing attack with Brett Rosengrant, who I think might be one of the best in 1A, now back for this year and some very explosive receivers in Nichols, Mahon, Snider, Grandy, Hileman and Jordan," said Shumway. "We have good speed and quickness at running back as well with Mahon, Grandy and Hileman, who can all double as receivers, as well as Silva. Our line, while young, is very athletic."

Offensively Shumway hopes to see the Lumberjacks become more well-rounded, something that having the senior quarterback returning should help to accomplish.

Sammy Mahon will be a key cog on each side of the ball at running back and linebacker, while lineman Bonner Paradis should be a senior stalwart on each side of the ball.

As far as the defensive side of things, the coach likes what he sees when it comes to the raw athleticism that exists.

"[Good] athleticism and team speed of most of our players," said Shumway. "We won’t have elite size on the line, but we should be fast and pretty stout."

After a year where the full group did not get many opportunities to play all together at once in 2016, Council hopes to see more luck with health this time around.

Defensively coming together is the name of the game.

"Just getting used to playing with each other, as we will be using quite a few new starters this year or players who were out last year with injuries," added Shumway.

For a typical 8-man powerhouse, the key to the season is pretty clear cut.

"We simply need to stay healthy. We were decimated by injuries last year and have even less players this year," said Shumway.

Senior Garett Snider and sophomore Daniel Jordan at receiver and defensive end should be some new impact players to help the Lumberjacks.

Following the loss of a senior class highlighted by current University of Idaho talent J.T. Mahon, Council will need new players like Snider and Jordan to step up to stay towards the upper echelon of the conference.

Tentatively, the first game for Council should come on September 8 at home against Idaho City.
