After a season under the tutelage of Todd Jensen the Rimrock Raiders will have a new face roaming the sidelines this year, as Mark Martell takes over.

Out of all the teams in the 1AD1 Western Idaho Conference, Rimrock has about as much youth as anybody.

“We are a young team with only two seniors on the roster,” said Martell. “We will run a multi-formational offense.”

One of the seniors will be running back and defensive back Ryan Nelson, a player who will receive plenty of carries out of the backfield for the Raiders.

Junior quarterback and defensive back Todd Marvin is also back to patrol the offense and try to slow down some of the high-powered passing attacks in conference play.

For Rimrock last season the defense struggled mightily, making it difficult to keep games close on a weekly basis.

The alignment on defense will be a 3-3 look, with youth all over the field ready to gain valuable experience. After giving up over 41 points a game last year, Martell hopes to see improvement in gang tackling and getting as many helmets to the football as possible each play.

Some other key players to watch for on both sides of the ball include Levi Nanney at running back and linebacker, Dalton Allison on each line and Tyrel Lowe at tight end and defensive back.

With this group in place, it is easy for the new coach to point to what he is most excited about for the upcoming campaign.

“Their excitement about the game of football and [the] work ethic to improve.”

In order to have a breakthrough and get out of the bottom of the conference standings, Rimrock will need to gel early in the season and come together when it matters most.

“[The x-factor] is the timing of our players peaking at the right moment in weeks six through nine,” added Martell.

With a young core in place and a new coach, Rimrock has a lot of unknowns entering the new season, but the enthusiasm is in place to make steps in the right direction.
