It’s always tough to put the stamp of favorite on any team in the 4A Great Basin West Conference due to the great parity seen throughout the league, however in 2017 the Minico Spartans should have a good chance.

Behind a 22nd year head coach in Tim Perrigot and eight returning starters on each side of the ball, the Spartans look to have what it takes to make yet another trip to the playoffs.

As always Minico will run the wing-t offense, taking full advantage of a well-established system that works to control the time of possession battle and pace the ball up and down the field.

Alongside new quarterback John Perrigot, the offensive unit has the makings of a quality group.

You better bet the run focus will be as prominent as ever with the talent on board.

“We are a multiple wing-t. We love to run the ball,” said Coach Perrigot. “Last year we averaged 21.4 points a game and rushed for 1,712 yards and 1,071 yards passing.”

Senior running back Larry Vega will lead the way as the bell cow, while Colter May, Tim Miller and Kaden Ball will all see good time in the backfield as well.

Within the line and in the receiving core multiple key components from a year ago return for the Spartans.

“Returning starter on the offensive line Juan Ruiz is a massive human being who bench pressed 185 pounds 31 times at the Southern Idaho Combine,” said Perrigot. “Senior tight end Garret Behunin [and receivers] Nicky Caldera and Regen Povlslen should be great targets to catch the football.”

Consistency is the big thing on defense, and with all the returning starters yet again, Minico should be successful on that side of the ball.

“We are a bend but not break defense,” said Perrigot. “New Defensive Coordinator is Calvin Pruett. Our defensive staff has been the key to our success over the years. We give up very few points in a season.”

The Spartans are led by defensive linemen in Miller and Fernando Larios and linebacker McKade Evenson.

Right out of the gate to begin the 2017 campaign Minico will be tested according to the experienced head coach.

“We will be traveling to Pocatello to play in the Rocky Mountain Rumble versus Grantsville, Utah week one. The following week we play a physical Century team. Two very difficult games to start the season. Our third game is our fierce rivalry game with Burley. We hope to represent our school, our community and Idaho in these games. We have won eight of the last 12 Great Basin West Conference Championships. We have missed the playoffs only once since 2004. We are hoping to be in the mix again.”

If things fall into place like Perrigot thinks they can, this could be a team that really threatens in the conference.

“If we stay healthy, it will be a great year for the Spartans. Many returning starters from last year’s team.”

He also mentioned great numbers within the program as a huge plus, with 115 kids coming out to play between the three teams in the program.

It is anyone’s best guess as to who will come out on top once the dust settles in conference action, but Minico should definitely factor in towards the top of the conference standings when all is said and done.
