Team Preview:

Second year Borah Head Coach Jason Burton knows the strength of his football team is on the lines, something that he is excited about looking ahead to the 2017 campaign.

It all gets started with the offensive front.

"We will go as they go," said Burton. "They are the heart and soul of our team."

Leading that group are returners Damion Knapp and Cristian Reyes, along with newcomers George Barrera and Brody Martinez.

In order to make the most of what is a good line, quarterback Jake Standlee hopes to spark the passing game to put some more points on the board for the Lions.

Junior receivers Chase Nett and Ellis Magnuson should be big targets for their fellow junior quarterback, while newcomer Illais Makaffi could get a heavy workload in the backfield.

The combination of some dynamic skill position players and a quality front five should help lead to some positive scoreboard totals for Borah against 5A SIC competition this season. The real question, as is the case for any team in the conference, how do you slow anybody down?

Similar to the offense, the strength on the other end of the ball is up front.

It's the first thing the second year coach points to when you ask him what the strength of the unit is.

"Our front six," said Burton. "[We] need to control the line of scrimmage and stop the run."

With the loss of Second Team All-State linebacker George Tarlas to graduation, slowing the run will be more difficult, however expect the Lions to find the pieces needed to give it a good shot this season.

Brenden Kilgore and Makaffi each can expect to see a heavy workload from the linebacker position, as they aim to slow down the high powered running attacks in conference play.

For Burton there are a lot of reasons as always to be excited for the new year, however when it comes down to it, seeing where the path leads is the most exciting.

"[Looking forward to] the journey with these young man and seeing what they can achieve."

A cross-town rivalry battle with Capital kicks the season off on opening weekend for the Lions.
