It is going to be a pretty different look for the Boise Braves in some ways this season, with a new head coach, different quarterback and potentially a new hope to eclipse the .500 mark this year, although it will be a mighty challenge in the always tough 5A SIC.

After patrolling the Braves offense last year, signal caller Will McMullin transferred to Rocky Mountain this offseason.

Boise also welcomes in Head Coach Jerry O'Mahony, an assistant since 2011 who knows the program well and should help keep the team headed in the right direction.

As a 1970's graduate of Boise High School, O'Mahony wants to build the tradition up for his alma matter.

"All players, all levels, must contribute in some way. The load must be distributed and that role must be executed well, however small," said O'Mahony. "Have a high bar and high expectations."

Striving for excellence is something that the Braves will look to do behind a balanced attack on offense.

Quarterbacks Andoni Beiter and Emmett Plummer will battle it out for reps behind center, with new tight ends Everett Collins and Blake Bohning and an experienced offensive line giving hope that the unit could turn out to be pretty solid.

Salimu Dahiri is the leading option out of the backfield, while Will Radice is expected to be the go-to option for whoever the primary quarterback ends up being.

The area for improvement from last year for the new head coach is to hold on to the ball and keep the defense off the field as much as possible.

"Possession football through balance and execution."

A 4-2 look on defense will be what O'Mahony goes to, with a speedy unit looking to rely on quality linemen to contain the box and let the back seven do its job.

"Strong defensive ends in Alex Ojukwu and three others competing," said O'Mahony. "Good athletes. Safeties have experience, as do corners. Good strength and speed at linebacker. [We will have a] constrict and fill mentality in the box. Know your gaps."

At the end of the day, the name of the game for Boise this season is simple.

"Possess the football, force the opponent to execute well, make them pay when they don’t," said O'Mahony.

The Braves get the 2017 campaign underway with a Thursday night affair on August 24 with the Ridgevue Warhawks.
