Emmett rolled through the 2015 season, winning the first state title in school history, but the Huskies now face the challenge of moving up to the 4A classification in 2016.

Emmett’s move from 3A to 4A is something that head coach Mike Schroeder is very excited about. The Huskies will open the 2016 season against Timberline, the first 5A school Emmett has played in quite some time, plus a matchup with the three-time defending state champions in 4A, Bishop Kelley on September 23.

The Huskies will have to defend their title without three key pieces from last year’s offense. Quarterback, Saige Wilkerson, receiver Connor Falk and running back Mason Farnsworth are all lost to graduation. The three were the core of Emmett’s high powered offense that routinely put up 40-50 points, averaging 51.5 points per game.

This year, the Huskies will face bigger and faster defenses, but should still manage to light up the scoreboard. Mitchel Maxfield, Marc Oribio, Spencer Keene and Luc Overton are all returning off a season in which they earned All-State honors. In addition, DJ Crump was All-Conference.

New at quarterback is Dane Buck, who is a mobile dual-threat option. Combine that with Keene returning at fullback and Crump returning at running back, Emmett will have a three-headed monster in the backfield. That running game will force defenses to play with eight or even nine men in the box, which will lead to the All-State receivers of Overton and Oribio in man coverage and Maxfield, an All-State tight end, with a lot of open space in the middle of the field.

Defense is where Emmett may struggle in 4A. With a lack of depth in the secondary and a defensive line looking for improvement, Emmett may find themselves in some shootouts during the season.
