The Southern Idaho Conference is stacked with teams that year after year contend for state titles and have established a winning tradition. Borah is no exception to this and they have 17 state championships to prove it.

First year head coach Jason Burton has been tasked with continuing the winning tradition. In addition to coaching as an assistant at Borah, Burton also coached at Bonneville High School in Idaho Falls for two seasons.

In his first season, Burton will have to do without quarterback, Hayden Brown, receivers Chris Hugon and Jake Paulin, defensive back Tyler Goodsell, linebacker Mark Jerome, who also was a force at running back and offensive linemen Nick Eden and Mitch Collins. Hugon and Paulin also made significant contributions in the secondary with Goodsell’s assistance.

Replacing Brown at quarterback is senior Justin Palmer, who will be helped by the fact that Mason Haley, a First Team All-Southern Idaho Conference receiver is returning for his senior year.

With Brolin Gumb playing on the other side of Haley, the Lions will have a potent aerial attack. Also returning are four offensive linemen - a spot that showed inexperience last season - Marcos Cazares, Lucas Langus, Caleb Christensen and Jaden Cavener, all entering their senior seasons.

Borah had no trouble throwing the football last season. An area where Burton hopes to see improvement is the running game and the interior offensive line in hopes the Lions can run the football with authority.

The Lions will also return Trevor Detwiler at linebacker. With the additional help of Cazares, Langus and Cavener on the defensive line, Borah will have no shortage of experience in the trenches.

If the Lions can have great leadership and play with swagger, it may make up for the inexperience they have in other places on the field and lead them into the playoffs.
