A senior-heavy group will look to turn the tide of the on-field results for the Shoshone football program this season.

Entering his fourth year on the sidelines, Head Coach Michael Perry sees reason for optimism for an offensive unit that has plenty of experience with his system and the expectations that go along with it.

"For the first time we have a group of players that have been in the system for four years and have begun to click offensively," said Perry. "We have all returning players on the line, we have experienced players returning at our skilled areas and have a new quarterback who understands the offense and what we are trying to do."

That click offensively needs to translate into more points this season for the Indians, who have a gauntlet of a schedule in the always tough 1AD1 Snake River Valley Conference, highlighted by the defending state champion Valley Vikings.

In 2015 the offensive unit was held to just 10.5 points per game by opposing defenses, but the addition of junior quarterback Ethan Perry is expected to bring an added punch on that side of the ball.

With the addition of Perry and the hard work put in by the returners in the offseason, the Shoshone head coach believes his team can compete against anyone on any given week.

"The biggest thing is believing you can compete with anyone. We have a tough conference and we as a team have not been successful against our conference foes for awhile. We just keep telling our players to believe and know that they can complete with anyone."

The 1A football ranks in Idaho are a high speed affair and being able to bounce back from adversity is of the utmost importance. Keeping the focus in those moments will be a key area for the Indians.

"We are focusing this year on playing one play at a time and moving on from each play and not dwelling on what has happened," said Perry. "Really working on making them more focused on the game and having them believe that they can be successful."

On each line at least three starters are back, which should help in the trenches. Second Team All-Conference offensive lineman Mark Guzman highlights the group up front. He'll be tasked with opening holes for fellow senior Alan Ramos on the ground.

Defensively the hope is that a small, but fast, linebacking core will be able to minimize big plays from the opposition, namely on the ground.

The mix of experience with the seniors and a freshman influx into the program should make for some more depth for Shoshone.

"This year upperclassmen are really focused on improving on the past few years," said Perry. "We have had more commitment this summer in the weight room and hope it will translate on the field. We are also excited about our incoming freshmen. They have jumped on board with learning our system and have really improved this summer."

A season of optimism for the Indians gets underway on September 2 on the road at Castleford.
