Team Preview

Written by: Matt Harris (@IdahoSportsMatt)

A couple of years ago, Butte County could only field one girls basketball team with seven total players, six of them being freshmen.

Now? The Lady Pirates have grown up a bit.

In a rarity in high school basketball, the team did not have any seniors from last year on the team – meaning that everyone is back for the black and orange. And fourth year head coach Carla Hansen is excited that they are all healthy too.

“We lost Shay Lambson to an ACL injury at the start of the season, then lost Kinsey Isham to a broken ankle just before districts,” she said. “Staying healthy is going to be key for us this season.” Butte County was the top team in the conference heading into districts last year and went two-and-out.

This season, the Pirates are looking to make amends for last year’s shortcomings and to make some noise along the way.

Returning to the fold is point guard Macy Hansen, who is back for her senior campaign after being named the Co-Player of the Year in the High Desert Conference. She will joined on the guard line by Lambson and junior Conlin Coburn. Up front, the Pirates have some length and size to work with as juniors Tausha Cummins, Kinsey Isham, and Meg Buxton lead the charge along with senior Bailey Chambers.

Offensively, Butte County is well rounded and expects to succeed on the arc and in the post. Hansen feels that her squad is strong across the board.

“We are going to rely on Shay and Macy to take care of the ball and be consistent scoring threats,” she said. “Sherawn and Conlin are our outside shooters and Meg, Tausha, and Kinsey to control the boards and score in the paint.”

Hansen said she would like to see her team be more aggressive in transition and also look to the post for more scoring.

“We want to post up effectively while keeping our outside shot alive,” she said.

Defensively, expect the Pirates to be aggressive overall. They are once again led by Sherawn Brownlee.

“Sherawn is our leading defender and is quick and aggressive,” said Hansen. “She has a good wing span and will steal the ball if given an opportunity.”

Despite the full, complete roster in terms of numbers, Hansen wants to push the issue on defense in a full court setting.

“Our numbers are still small but we would like to press more this year,” she said. “We also want to improve our foot speed and do a better job of blocking out.”

With Butte County dropping down to Idaho’s smallest classification, the Pirates are now members of the Rocky Mountain Conference – and Hansen expects some good battles to be had once conference play rolls around.

“I would expect Mackay and Rockland will be games that fans won’t want to miss,” she said.

If Butte County can stay healthy and improve from week-to-week, they could be a real threat to make serious noise come February.
