A new era has begun at Vallivue High School. The Falcons have dropped down to 4A and there is a new sheriff running the show in Darrin Shindle.

Shindle, who is in his second head coaching gig, inherits a program that won one game last season.

Before arriving at Vallivue, Shindle spent two seasons as an assistant at Capital and five years as the head coach at Melba.

He takes over a program that has not seen a double-digit winning season in years. Shindle will look to change that.

“Underdogs,” he said. “We talk about playing with a chip on our shoulder each game.”

The Falcons are young and do not return any players with All-Conference honors, although no key pieces were lost from last year.

Sarah Reinecker enters her junior season as a wing, while sophomores Tawni Morrison, Hattie Hruza and Annie Schmidt will retain their young but impactful roles in the starting five.

“We can put good pressure on the ball,” Simpson said. “Annie Schmidt does a good job helping and altering shots.”

Courtney Van Winkle and Sidney Johnson, both sophomores, will see significant varsity playing time for the first time on the wings.

Offensively, Shinkle’s system will have the Falcons on the run while maintaining careful shot selection and being disciplined with the basketball, avoiding turnovers at all costs.

Defensively, it will be all about forcing turnovers so the Falcons can run in transition.

Winning the game in transition will be the key for Vallivue this season. The more running there is, the better the Falcons' chances are.

Now that Vallivue is in the 4A, it gives its rivalry game with Caldwell that much more meaning.

The Falcons are slated to take on their cross-town rival twice this season, once on Jan. 4 and once on Jan. 26.
