Team Preview

Last season was a transition year for Head Coach Deena Garbett and her Declo Hornets, with a younger and quicker group taking the floor and showing glimpses of what the future could hold.

In what is just a two team conference, the Hornets faced Wendell five times, winning twice, but falling just short in meeting number five, costing the team a chance at a state tournament appearance.

That 45-43 nail-biting loss to cap the year leaves Declo eager to get back on the floor to bring in the new campaign.

All-Conference guard Paige Ramsey's return gives Garbett a team leader who brings a high level of play on each end of the floor.

Fellow backcourt option Kelsie Hamilton gives the Hornets an outstanding one-two punch that can match up well in the 2A ranks.

The fourth year head coach says the strength of the unit is attacking the basket, but there are also a few areas she will hope to see improvement.

"Being more consistent with the outside shot and free throw shooting."

On the other end of the floor is the Declo strength, as the Hornets consistently stayed in games last season due to solid defense, something which should continue with much of the same cast back.

"We are a very disciplined, scrappy and quick defensive team," said Garbett.

Defensive rebounding is one of the key focus areas, as the roster doesn't have as much size as some of the opponents the Hornets will go up against.

But for a team that likes to push the tempo and get transition baskets, the speed element is what will give them a big advantage.

"This team is quick. We are very aggressive and work well together," said Garbett. "It will be fun to see what they can do when they come together as a team."

There is good potential for Declo to bounce right back and get back in the 2A state tournament field this season.
