Team Preview

Last year, Borah went 18-11, but they were young.

This season, the Lady Lions return four starters to a lineup that punched it first ticket to the state tournament in years.

Although the Lady Lions went two-and-out in the state tournament, the returning experience is something that Borah has the upper hand on most other SIC teams.

Borah returns four starters, two of which have at least two year of varsity experience under their belt, including senior point guard Kiana Courpus has who is in her fourth season running the offense.

Courpus averaged 12 points, four rebound, three assists and two steal per game last season and was named Second Team All-SIC.

“Kiana is an experienced leader with quickness to get to the basket and create space,” said head coach Jason Willer.

Alyssa Bolt has been All-SIC Honorable Mention for the last two seasons and averaged 13 points and 7 rebounds per-game.

The other two-time returning varsity starter is Alyssa Bolt who was an All-SIC Honorable Mention last season where she averaged 13 points and seven boards per-game. Junior Maddie Gertiz was also named an Honorable Mention of the SIC, where she averaged eight points and four rebound per-game.

Returning off an ACL injury is Alesia Jones while Kylee Geis returns as a part-time starter.

“[Jones] is a great defender and has great ability to attack the basket, pass and score,” Willer said. “Kylee, like Jones is a great defender and ball handler with great potential to score. The trio of Corpus, Jones and Geis makes a formidable back court.”

6’2 sophomore Nyalam Thabach is saw valuable playing time as a sophomore in the low-post. Thaback is expected to do the same this season.

“Combined with inside-out shooting, driving and posting up that Alyssa Bolt and Maddie Geritz have, the offense has a very well balanced attack,” Willer said. “The Lady Lions expect to see their shooting percentage improve again this season putting more points on the board relieving the defense some.”

That experience will also help Borah on the defensive end of the floor.

“With more experience comes more patience, more aggressiveness and a better understanding of court awareness,” Wilder said. “Strong half-court defense and solid defensive rebounding have been a strong aspect of the game for Borah over the last few seasons and this year should be even better.”
Borah will look to use this new found experience to take on a conference that sent five teams to the state tournament last season.
“The 5A SIC is a very deep conference,” Willer said. “To win the conference this year, it is important to stay healthy and win some important road games.”

After the winter break, Borah will play just three road games – Meridian on Jan. 5, Columbia on Jan. 10 and Kuna on Jan. 21. The Lady Lions will play five of their last seven games at home.

“Everyone in the program is excited to see continued improvement from last season,” Willer said. “Last year was the first time back to the state tournament and all expectations from around the program are a second straight trip to the Idaho Center.”
