Team Preview

Let’s admit it – there are a few people who will be reading this preview as they ask themselves, “Riverstone International School?”

So let’s take a moment to tell you a bit about the small school, located in east Boise:

- It is a K through 12 school, with about 90 students in the high school.

- As indicated in its name, Riverstone International’s families and students come from over 30 countries around the world, including (but not limited to) Canada, Russia, South Africa, Japan, India and Australia.

- It fields high-school varsity teams in boys and girls basketball, along with volleyball.

- 100 percent of its graduates have been accepted into four-year colleges or universities world-wide.

So, it is fair to say head coach Wally Bashaw has some smart girls out there when the Otters take the court.

The Otters are coming off a 5-12 campaign but return a number of players, giving Bashaw quality experience on the floor. Leading the way is sophomore guard Anna Frizzell, an honorable-mention All-Western Idaho Conference performer last season as a freshman. She’s part of a big sophomore class that includes guards Vimean Rath, Aubrey Hurt and Laurel Canyon along with post player Maggie Liebech. Throw in freshman post player Zoe Peterson and it certainly looks like the best days are ahead for Bashaw’s program.

The Otters also have three seniors to lean on, rounding out the roster: guard Nakita Schwartsman, post Naomi Clayton and post Narija Stillonivich.

“If we get the right combination out on the court,” Bashaw noted. “We should be able to stay competitive.”

Riverstone showed flashes last season, including picking up three of its five wins away from home. An additional year of growth and experience should help the Otters close the gap on the top teams in the WIC, with Bashaw pointing out that the experience and the ability to stay healthy would be the keys to his team’s season.

The veteran coach (30 years of experience overall) likes his team’s quickness and ability to push the tempo, but will be working with his players to see continued development with the team’s half-court offense and ability to get the ball inside.

Bashaw and his team got a small assist from the schedule-maker this season. The Otters will play four of their final six games of the regular season at home, which includes key conference matchups with North Star Charter, Horseshoe Bend, Notus and Idaho City leading up to the district tournament.
