Team Preview

Written by: Will Hoenike

When the Snake River Valley Conference coaches released their annual All-Conference girls basketball honorees, the first team went like this:

Senior, senior, senior, freshman, senior.

Wait … what? A freshman?

Guard Madison Jackson was the only non-senior to be selected to the SRV All-Conference first team. Hard enough to be selected to the first team at all, but … as a freshman?

Jackson earned the honor and now has three seasons to build on it for head coach Michael Calkins. What’s even better for Calkins – his ten-member varsity squad has just three seniors. Jackson is now a sophomore and honorable mention All-Conference forward Darcie Condie is just a junior.

The Panthers have been trending the right way since the calendar flipped to 2016. Last season, Parma started with just three wins in its first 13 games. Starting with its first game of 2016, the team went 7-5, coming up one win short of the 3A State Tournament play-in game.

The mission now is to build on the gains from the end of last season. And Calkins’ crew did so, winning three of its first four games. The dynamic duo of Jackson and Condie have done their part; in a recent win at Nampa Christian, the two combined for 44 points. In the game, Condie knocked down six three-point shots while Jackson scored 22 points right around the basket, adding 11 rebounds and six steals as well.

Calkins has three seniors to help the team as well, Lydia Stevenson, Kassidy Forsberg and Ashley Gentry.

The team started out hot on offense, averaging over 55 points per game. If the Panthers can maintain that pace, they’ll win a good number of basketball games.

When it comes to the 3A Snake River Valley Conference, Emmett moved up to the 4A classification. Payette’s rebuilding project continues and, while they are not to be ignored or taken lightly, they may not have the horses to compete for an SRV title. Both Weiser and Fruitland are young, yet talented teams. Homedale qualified for the 3A State Tournament last season. It seems to be a competitive – and very young – conference. Parma is positioned well to challenge not only for an SRV title, but a 3A State Tournament berth.

Two potentially pivotal games come late in the season when Parma travels to Fruitland on January 19 and then, a week later, Fruitland journeys down the highway to Parma on January 26.
