As the final few seconds ticked off the clock at Mountain Home High School late last February, a reality settled over the Marsing Huskies basketball program.

Close. Oh so close.

The Huskies, coached by Tim Little, had reached the 2A play-in game against Wendell. A win, and they’d reach the 2A state tournament. But Marsing came up on the wrong end of the scoreboard on that day and watched as Wendell celebrated a trip to state (the Trojans ultimately placed third at state).
This season, there’s no contentment in coming close.

“I have cycled through an entire group and this year’s seniors have been in my system for four years,” Little, who is entering his fourth season atop the program, told the Preview. “So there will be high expectations.”

Last season, the Huskies opened the season with nine losses in ten games before finding their footing, including a critical season sweep of North Star Charter, a dramatic home win over New Plymouth and an impressive road win over state-qualifier Nampa Christian. That put them in position to reach the state play-in game.

Now, with All-Conference forward Nick Lankow back up front along with Sam Gaffigan, Little has some size and skill to work with in the post. Senior point guard Dakota Hardy and sophomore guard Enrique Quebrado return, as do senior wings Jose and Tre Ponce. Add in senior transfer Tyler Simonson, who quarterbacked the Huskies’ football team this fall, and there’s experience and some depth along the Snake River in Owyhee County.

“Team play, getting everyone involved,” Little said of his team’s strengths. “Patience and working for the best possible ‘look’ each possession.”

When asked about things his team will strive to improve upon, he cited two things that almost any basketball coach will tell you are pivotal to a team’s success – limiting turnovers and rebounding.

The Huskies will get another shot at Wendell on December 3. The team is also scheduled to appear in the second Small-School Kickoff at Mountain View High School in Meridian on December 10, an event that pits small-school teams from the Boise area against small-school teams from outside the area. Marsing appeared in the event last season and was topped by – you guessed it – Wendell.

Little points to the regular-season finale, in Marsing, against Cole Valley Christian on February 10 as a key game.

“That game will have significant impact on seeding for the district tourney,” Little noted.
