The Emmett High football team enjoyed its share of success last season.
The Huskies finished with an 8-3 record and made their first state playoff appearance since 1997. Two of their star players have gone on to play at state universities: Luke Hyde is a Vandal at Idaho, and Daniel Heck is a Bengal at Idaho State.
But don't expect Emmett to rest on its laurels.
“Expectations are high, and we have more experienced players,” said coach Mike Schroeder, who was named the 3A Snake River Valley Conference coach of the year last season.
The cupboard definitely appears to be pretty full in Emmett.
Start with the quarterback position: Saige Wilkerson returns after being named a first-team, all-conference player last season.
Move on to the offensive backfield: Mason Farnsworth comes back after a campaign that earned him first-team, all-conference honors.
With a pair of experienced offensive weapons in Wilkerson and Farnsworth, the Huskies should be able to move the ball.
And if their drives come up short, they can turn to one of the best legs in the state in kicker Yancy Hyde. Hyde earned first-team, all-conference and all-state honors last season.
“We should have a solid run game,” said Schroeder, who has experience coaching at the college level. “Our focus is to be more dynamic and balanced. We must improve our pass protection.”
Defensively, teams should have some trouble trying to attack through the air. Emmett has an experienced, talented secondary.
“With Luke Overton and Conner Falk, we have some depth in the secondary,” Schroeder said.
Schroeder also thinks his defensive line should be solid against the rush.
But more than anything, Schroeder will preach discipline to his defense this season. He said last season the defense tended to be overly aggressive, which led to unnecessary penalties.
Discipline is important to Schroeder, and he thinks the most disciplined and toughest team could emerge as the conference leader at the end of the year.
And in his estimation, that toughness starts in the trenches.
Hayden Clayton and Brian Bevan are returning players who should be see time on Emmett's offensive and defensive lines.
“We feel whoever has the best up-front offensive line/defensive line group will be the favorite,” Schroeder said.
Speaking of favorites, Schroeder has a couple of games on his radar that fans might want to circle on their calendars.
“Probably Fruitland, because they're pretty good!” Schroeder said. “Homedale, as well.”
