If head coach Phil Helbling needs inspiration for his Moscow Bears players of what hard work and determination can do, he doesn’t need to look any further than his own coaching staff.

TreShawn Robinson, Marcis Fennell, Demaundray Woolridge and Darryl Murphy all played football at the University of Idaho. And they are part of a staff that also includes Zac Carscallen, Logan Brooks and Adam Ingwell, teaching Moscow High players what it takes to compete.

And compete the Bears will, facing a challenging schedule that features more opponents from the state of Washington (5) than the state of Idaho (4). Such is life in the three-team 4A Inland Empire League, where Moscow will battle with Lakeland and Sandpoint for a spot in the state playoffs.

When asked what he was most excited about for the coming season, Helbling told IdahoSports.com, “The amount of athletes returning on both sides of the ball.”

It starts up front, where the Bears return three starters along the offensive front in senior Austin Durham, junior Wyatt Youngblood and junior Pat Coulter. Coulter, a junior, was an All-IEL honoree as a sophomore.

“We have everyone coming back this year,” Helbling said of his players in the trenches. “We are really excited about what we have up front.”

Joining that trio are a pair of juniors (Caleb Couch, Nate Davis) and a pair of sophomores (Adam Wallace, Tanner Newton), giving Moscow seven talented offensive linemen to lead the offensive attack in front of quarterback Devin Carscallen.

The Bears also have depth at running back, where senior Chad Robertson, senior Eric Redinger and junior Bryson Bennett will help shoulder the load along with junior Collin Mattson. The team also features a pair of returning receivers in Collin Niehenke and Noah Klocke.

The Bears return nine starters to a defense that had its trials last season. Another year in the weight room, coaching and practice should lead to improvement.

Youngblood, Durham and Coulter will play along the defensive front with Redinger and Bennett at linebacker. Niehenke and Klocke are expected to man the cornerback spots with Carscallen and Robertson at safety. Helbling says he also has a number of underclassmen ready to step in and contribute.

“We have a lot of good, senior ball players at all the key positions,” Helbling said of his defense. “We want to be very physical and create big plays, take the ball away, eleven ‘hats’ to the ball.”

Moscow has lost its two conference games each of the last two seasons, keeping them out of the 4A state playoffs. The Bears won the IEL conference title in 2012, falling in the state quarterfinals to Bonneville.

If the team’s offensive line and team defense performs as the coaching staff expects, Moscow will be in great position to compete for a berth in the state playoffs.

It won’t be easy – Sandpoint returns a lot of talent from last season’s six-win team and Lakeland has been tough on Moscow, winning three of the last four matchups.
