Team Preview

Last season was a new era for the Caldwell High girls basketball team.

William Rodgers was in his first season as the Cougars head coach and several players gained some experience as the team finished with a 7-14 record.

With last season under their belt, the Cougars hope to ply some of that experience into more success on the court this year.

“I am excited to see how the returning players continue their progress with my system and philosophy,” Rodgers said. “I am also excited to work with the players we have added to our lineup.”

As of this writing, Rodgers' system is in high gear: Caldwell stood at 4-0 after knocking off 5A Timberline.

Caldwell's roster features eight players with varsity experience, including senior guard Koralee Bower, who earned all-conference honorable mention honors last season. Fellow senior guard Lissette Saenz has shown that she can provide some scoring punch when called upon.

So, yes, Caldwell has an experienced roster, but it will miss Tamika Russell, who is now competing in cross country and track at the College of Idaho.

“Tamika was a great leader,” Rodgers said. “She was second in scoring and our best defender. We will miss her leadership and energy.”

Two new players might help fill her shoes: freshman Jalen Calendar and junior Molly Dayley.

Moving forward, Rodgers said the entire team needs to learn lessons gleaned from a year ago.

“We had too many turnovers last year that led to easy baskets for the opposing team,” Rodgers said. “We need to take care of the ball better.”

But the bottom line is this: Caldwell has every opportunity to build upon last season in Rodgers' second year at the helm.

“Last year, we competed but lost several close games,” Rodgers said. “Our goal this year is to win those close ones.”
