Emmett won’t have any shortage of big-game experience in the 2015-16 season. Many of the boys basketball players were also on the team’s state championship football team, which the Huskies hope will translate in terms of experience and savvy, at a minimum.

Past that, though, they have four key players returning, led by first-team all-conference selection Luc Overton, a junior forward. Sophomore point guard D.J. Crump, and forwards Saige Wilkerson and Yancy Hyde, both seniors. Those four will be leaned on to carry the load for Emmett as it attempts to make the state tournament come March. Power forward Mitchell Maxfield could help bolster the Huskies’ paint presence as well.

Emmett’s team quickness and penetration ability, particularly through Crump, will give the Huskies a dynamic offense with penetration and kick-outs or lay-offs to other teammates. With experienced players capable of getting shots for themselves and their teammates, it will be difficult to stop Emmett from getting good looks – whether the Huskies can consistently knock them down is another question.

Defensively Emmett has plenty of shutdown defenders and boasts a legitimate post presence in Maxfield. Teams may have trouble getting to the rim and setting up the offense, and that could lead to turnovers and transition points, which is something the Huskies are looking to improve on in 2015-16.Emmett’s collective athletic ability should pose matchup problems for most opponents.

The Huskies will have a solid game plan going inside, but 3-point shooting could be the difference in whether they can make the state tournament or have to wait again until next season.
