After an outstanding four year career star forward Trey Dill has graduated, and with that, a new era begins for the Dietrich Blue Devils.

In his senior season, Dill averaged 21 points per game and hauled in 9.5 rebounds per game. Combined with the loss of rebounding machine Austin Fenstermaker down-low, Head Coach Wayne Dill and Dietrich will look to those who do return and a strong sophomore class to lead the way this season.

Leading the returners for the Blue Devils are combo guards Garrett Astle and Jake Smith. Astle is a solid ball-handler who has a nice slashing to the basket ability, while both he and Smith are good shooters who will help replace the scoring punch that Dill previously provided.

Another Dill will also look to help replace the productivity. Slade Dill is another lanky perimeter shooter who should help Dietrich continue to be tough to slow down offensively.

Kade Shaw should also be a similar contributor offensively, with the sophomore expected to see plenty of ball handling opportunities as well.

“We run the floor well, make defenses guard the whole floor and we attack the rim well,” said Coach Dill. “When we are going as fast as we can go, it’s still too slow for me.”

Last season that blistering pace put Dietrich over 80 points on four separate occasions, as the Blue Devils were once again one of the highest scoring teams in the state. While the loss of Trey Dill will make things difficult offensively, the two losses on the boards of Dill and Fenstermaker could perhaps be the biggest challenge to replace.

“We need to find a way to control the boards, and to defend the inside game with our lack of size,” said Dill. Even with the youth, the Blue Devils look to be contenders in the 1AD2 classification one more time this season.

“We are very young, and yet, pretty experienced,” said Dill. “We return three starters and our skill level is good.”
