All eyes are on the Bishop Kelly boys basketball team this season.
The Knights finished as the runner-up at the 4A state tournament last season, their best finish since 2005.

And with a solid nucleus of players returning, Bishop Kelly will be the team to beat in the 4A Southern Idaho Conference this season.

Coach Ryan Kerns hopes that his team uses last year as a springboard and a motivating factor this season.

“We have a lot of returners and some good incoming players,” Kerns said. “Last year's loss in the state championship should help us play with purpose.”

A few returning players in particular should be able to be fueled by that loss. Dan Sabala, a junior guard, was named a second-team, all-conference player last season, and fellow guards Bronson King and Mike Martinez were named honorable mentions.

Missing from last year's team are a couple of players who provided senior leadership and athleticism: Tyler Allumbaugh, a first-team, all-conference player last season, and David Poulsen (second team).

Still, Bishop Kelly has a total of six guards who have some experience at the varsity level, and Kerns said he will utilize that guard play to try to run an uptempo offense.

He added, however, that fast play doesn't need to translate to sloppy play, and he wants his team to really focus on solid shot selection this season.

Defensively, he wants his team to be aggressive and create turnovers.

In his second season at the helms, Kerns said he'll focus on a couple of areas where he thinks his team can improve defensively.
“Help side and rebounding are always areas where we can get better,” Kerns said.

Bishop Kelly jumped out to a 2-1 record to begin the season, as of this writing. The Knights lost a close contest against 5A Centennial for its lone loss (sophomore Max Rice scored 20 points in the losing effort).

Bishop Kelly will continue to grind through its early-season schedule with an eye on conference play. Although the Knights are considered the favorites, Kerns knows his team will be tested – and the conference opener against Middleton on Dec. 11 looms large.

“Both teams will be really good this year,” Kerns said.
