The Borah Lions had yet another state appearance last season, but finished a little short of their goal of capturing another State Championship. The Lions finished with a record of 20-8 and lost to rival Capital in the third place contest.

Entering the 2015-16 season Borah will have all of their key pieces back after only graduating two seniors. Returning for the Lions are junior guard, Max Reitman, senior forward, Jake Paulin, senior forward, Mark Jerome, senior forward/First team All-SIC member, Rylan Bergersen, and senior point guard/First team All-SIC member Deandre Jones. Bergersen and Jones led Borah in scoring last season, but in order for the team to be successful this year the Lions will need more out of their other starters and their bench. Newcomers for the Lions come into the form of senior guard, Sammi Ghazzawi, and sophomore post, Derek Opland.

Heading into his 22nd season Head Coach Cary Cada won’t be short on talent. He has many members on his team that are multiple year starters and have experience at the top level in the state. He is anxious to see who will step up to help the three main scorers in Bergersen, Jones, and Jerome.

“We need more players to be a scoring threat this season. This was a weakness last year, but I believe that we will have more players this year that can contribute offensively, plus a year of maturity underneath us. I hope we can play together as one unit a little bit more and raise our level of expectations for ourselves and as a team.”

Borah will be one of the smaller teams in the state and the conference again this season, but even though they are small, they play with smarts and confidence. Jake Paulin 6’1” and Mark Jerome 5’11” can hold their own against any opponent and play taller and bigger than they actually are. They have the ability to guard on the perimeter or go down low to bang with the big guys. Coach Cada believes his team can make up for their size and be more consistent and together since all five of Borah’s starters are returning.

The Lions are chasing their 12th state title in school history this season, and heading into this year they have as good as chance as anybody to capture the 5A crown. Coach Cada believes that the state has the most talent from top to bottom that the 5A classification has seen in quite a while and he knows qualifying for state is going to be just as tough as winning another championship. Borah’s goal is to improve practice by practice game by game, and if they can be playing their best basketball near districts and raise each other up they have a great chance to get number 12.

GAMES TO WATCH: Borah plays Boise High on January 8, 2015 this year. Manny Varela who has been a long time assistant coach at Borah is the new head coach at Boise and his players are very excited to play this game against their former coach. The game will be played down at Boise High School.
