The Eagle Mustangs are one of three teams in the 5A Southern Idaho Conference that went through a coaching change in the offseason. Eagle will be led by first year head coach Alex Wells to begin the 2014-15 season, replacing nine year head coach Tom Seifert.

Coach Wells has coached 11 years throughout the northwest with his most recent job being at the Division 1 junior college level in Iowa, coaching for Marshalltown Community College. He has also coached at Walla Walla Community College and won three state titles with Troy High School.

Last season, Eagle finished with a 7-15 record and missed the state tournament. The Mustangs started out strong going 5-3 their first eight games, but faded down the stretch going 4-10 the rest of the way. This season Eagle returns a pack of returning players that can shoot and as a team last year shot close to 500 threes.

Returning for the Mustangs are leading scorer (11.7ppg) and three point shooter senior guard, Riley Leavitt, second leading scorer (6.6ppg) Spencer Smith, senior forward Josh Labrador, and leading rebounder (5.8rpg) in senior forward, Hunter Floyd. Eagle also graduated a handful of seniors from last year’s squad.

It would be safe to say that Eagle lived and died by the 3-pointer last season, but this season Coach Wells would like to be a little more balanced on offense as he institutes a new system.

Eagle will have a little more experience this season and will be returning a bunch of its key players, but inexperience in a new system and new coach will be the Mustangs’ weakness at the start of the season.

GAMES TO WATCH: To start out the new year Eagle will play a trio of games at CenturyLink Arena against Post Falls, Fulton HS – Canada, and Alta HS – Utah. These games will be played January 1-3, 2015. Head down to check out some talent we don’t always see here in the Treasure Valley.
