PGA Pro-File: Erica Haney
How were you introduced
to the game of golf? At the
age of 5 my family moved to a
house by the Purple Sage Golf
Course. My family took up the
sport together and I was im-
mediately hooked. I loved
spending evenings and sum-
mer days at the course with
my family, and as I got older
would walk, ride my bike or
drive my dad’s golf cart to the
course to practice and play on
my own. You could always find
me on one of the holes practic-
ing different shots I would
challenge myself to perfect.
How did you get started in
the golf industry? I grew up
loving to play competitive golf
and started playing in IGA Jun-
ior golf tournaments at a
young age. As an older junior I
enjoyed qualifying for and
competing in many national &
international tournaments, in-
cluding Junior Worlds at Tor-
rey Pines, the Big “I” National
Championship, the Westfield
Junior PGA Championship, and
representing Idaho on the
Girls’ Junior America’s Cup
team. I also enjoyed playing in
the local junior league my
mom was president of. As a
junior golfer participating in
these events had a profound

reason I have dedicated my
professional career to teach-
ing others this wonderful
game and to junior golf.
Any dreams of playing pro-
fessionally, other than RM-
SPGA events? Certainly.
What is your most memo-
rable moment on the golf
course? Hole 17
at Purple Sage, I was 6 years
old, playing with my dad and I
chipped my ball in the hole
from about 25 yards out. That
is the first moment I remem-
ber as a youngster playing
golf, and I will never forget it.
Who is your favorite pro-
fessional player and why? I
do not have a favorite profes-
sional player although a quote
by Nancy Lopez has traveled
with me since discovering it in
college: “Great champions
have an enormous sense of
pride. The people who excel
are those who are driven to
show the world and prove to
themselves just how good they
are.” What equipment is in your
golf bag? All Callaway - Driver,
3-wood, 3-hybird, 4-iron thru
P, 50, 54, 58, and Odyssey
Protype Black #2 Putter
What's the most unusual
item in your golf bag? I al-
ways have my golf bag with
me when teaching so I can
show students while also ex-
plaining. Because I always
have my bag with me it’s sort
of become my “golf purse”
