When a coach who brought a program 17 playoff appearances in 19 seasons is replaced by one who has ten state titles as a head coach to his name, the transition is one as good as anyone can reasonably expect.

That is the exact scenario for the Weiser Wolverines this season, as John Srholec Jr. has stepped down and former Pocatello, Snake River and Raft River head coach Tom Harrison enters.

While the Harrison hire should bring instant credibility to the Wolverines, there is still plenty of work that needs to go in first before the team can compete for state titles. It all starts with relationships.

“Building relationships with players and coaches. Being part of a new program and watching our players begin the process of believing in themselves as a team. Watching our players increase their skill set,” added Harrison.

One player who the new head coach has to be thrilled to have on the roster is running back Braden Bumgarner, an All-Conference selection last year.

Quarterback Brody von Brethorst is also back with Paul Crawford at one of the receiver spots and Angel Magana highlighting the offensive line.

Looking ahead on a program-wide scope, incoming freshman quarterback Brett Spencer has the potential to be a major impact talent at Weiser for years to come.

Defensively it is a wait and see game for a new coach to learn what he has and how he would like to utilize it.

“I will have to evaluate our strengths and weaknesses as the season progresses. [Linebackers] Mikade Wall, Braden Bumgarner and Angel Magana look solid,” said Harrison.

He hopes to see the unit create plenty of turnovers and generate more stops to keep the ball in Bumgarner and the offenses hands. If that can happen, the Wolverines could dominate the time of possession battle this season.

Weiser starts the season with a rematch of an overtime thriller from a year ago with the Buhl Indians coming to town. That game can be seen live and free on IdahoSports.com.
