After one of the most successful seasons in school history since winning back-to-back state titles at the 2A classification in 1994 and 1995, a new man takes over on the sideline for Glenns Ferry in Jake Shrum.

Head coach Laif Morrison was not the only loss for the Pilots, as a program changing senior class highlighted by quarterback Kody Arellano, two-way star Eric Ballesteros, linebacker Brady Turner and running back and defensive back Carlos Gastelum having all departed as well.

It leaves a difficult challenge in front of the first year head coach as far as finding new leadership and key talent at skill positions.

Second Team All-Conference offensive lineman Keyton Cook is back to lead the front, with Jared Self and Alonso Ortiz surrounding him. That group should be one of the strengths of the 2017 version of the Pilots.

New junior quarterback Wacey Williams and wide receiver Devon Morrison will be relied upon to fill some of the talent void at the skill positions.

On defense the line should be the strength as well, with Ortiz and Self anchoring the unit.

Shrum hopes to see improvement however in the back end of the defense when it comes to slowing down opposing passing attacks.

For Glenns Ferry, it's all about bettering each individual player and the collective team in football and in life. That leads into the theme of the season for the Pilots.

"Gainz, 'Always become better on the field and off the field'," added Shrum.

As a first year head coach, Shrum is ready for the new challenge.

"[I'm most excited] for the opportunity to be a part of the kids’ lives."

He hopes to see the Pilots eliminate turnovers as much as possible on the offensive end, while also becoming a stout defensive unit against high powered offenses throughout the 1AD1 classification.

It will be an uphill climb with all of the talent that departed from a year ago, but Glenns Ferry will look to get it started right with a non-conference battle in week one before battling Hagerman to begin league play on September 1 at home.
