For 9th-year head coach Monica Cockerille, it’s an opportunity to end on a high note. To see the program she inherited go from a one-win season to the top of the heap at Idaho City High School.

“We’ve worked to build a program,” Cockerille told the Preview. “This is my last year coaching at Idaho City and I hope that our strong program continues.”

Cockerille, who has a law practice in Boise, will be returning to it full-time after this season. And no matter what happens this season, she has guided a program that won one game in her first season to a team that won 19 games last season and won the Western Idaho Conference title.

The Wildcats return four seniors – Taylor Lanham, Aspen Demasters, Kaylene Gallegos and Rachel Cummings. But those around the WIC are talking more about who Idaho City doesn’t have back. Margaret Anderson and Joy Billings. Anderson in particular was a 1A All-State performer last season, averaging nearly 16 points and 12 rebounds per game.

“They brought intensity and strong skills to our team,” Cockerille said. “They could play any position and were versatile.”

That doesn’t mean this year’s squad is void of talent. Far from it, in fact.

“We are fast and focused on defense,” Cockerille noted. “Defense will be our strength, particularly with Rachel (Cummings) and Kaylene (Gallegos) slowing the ball down.”

Seeing younger players come of age and replace last season’s senior class is something the coaching staff is excited for.

“It will require focus, dedication and determination,” Cockerille said. “They can do it and, when they do, it will boost their confidence not only as athletes, but individuals.”

The Wildcats play five of their final eight regular-season games away from the friendly confines in Idaho City, so getting off to a fast start is important. That includes a rivalry matchup against Horseshoe Bend – “Horseshoe Bend is always a rival and they will be very good this year,” Cockerille told the Preview – on December 6 in Idaho City.
