Team Preview

Written by: Scott Burton

To say that the Wood River Wolverines are in a rebuilding year might be an understatement. Wood River graduated 8 seniors, including stand out post player Rory Cole. First year head coach, Amanda Crist, will certainly have her hands full as this year’s team most likely won’t resemble what we saw last year from the Wolverines.

Junior standout, Blair Radford, will be the player the Wolverines look to for scoring and leadership as the all-conference player from last season is about all the scoring Wood River has coming back. Junior guard, Tess Hollister will have to step in and develop some rapport with Radford on the guard line if the Wolverines are to compete this year.

Crist, who spent her time coaching the Freshmen in Twin Falls, will most certainly bring an intense style of defense with her in hopes of using her teams quickness to her advantage.

“Our defensive strength is that we are very quick, which causes problems for offenses to operate efficiently,” says Crist.

Overall team defense and ball pressure will be points of emphasis this season for the Wolverines.

Starting your varsity coaching career with a bevy of inexperienced players is a challenge, but it’s a challenge welcomed by the new head coach.

“We are a very young team who is excited to learn. We are all excited to see how this young team reacts when faced with older/experienced opponents,” comments Crist.

With a couple of winnable games to open the season, the Wolverines should get some much needed confidence early on.
