Watersprings didn’t win a single game last season. Or the season before that. In fact, it’s been three years since it won a girls basketball game. But 2015-16 represents the season where things finally start looking up for the Warriors. They return six players, including all five starters, each of which complements the others and should give them a good platform for this season.
Led by sophomore forward Taeya Dixon, an all-conference honoree last season as a freshman, Watersprings has plenty of athleticism in its starting lineup to give opponents fits. Dixon can score inside and outside, and Hope Stauffer is quick and strong in penetrating the lane and facilitating for other teammates. Ellizabeth Stauffer is also quick at the shooting guard position, and that balance should allow all five Watersprings players on the floor to get involved.
Defensively the Warriors will look to mix it up between man and zone, but either way, opponents can expect an athletic, aggressive defense designed to force turnovers and create transition opportunities. Watersprings has a balance of perimeter presence and physical post play, with Dixon and Hannah Goracke inside, and will look to improve on a defense that came on in leaps and bounds toward the end of last season.
Head coach John Yadon said need to improve in 2015-16 include shot selection and ball movement on offense, and transition defense. If Watersprings can complement its strengths by shoring up those areas of improvement, good things could be in store in the season ahead.
