Team Preview

With several players back from last year's 3-14 team, the Spartans are looking for better results this year.

"We have the core of our team back," second-year Timberline coach Dana Strong said, "and have an increasing desire to work and compete."

Returners include Morgan Willet, a 5-5 senior shooting guard; Kass Jared, a 5-6 senior power forward; Lacey Bonner, a 5-6 senior center; Annika Cook, a 5-6 junior center; Cady Jared, a 5-5 junior point guard; Rikki Spencer, a 5-2 junior shooting guard; Kayla Willet, a 5-3 sophomore shooting guard; and Erin Sellers, a 5-4 sophomore point guard.

Strong said the Spartans have good team speed. The Spartans plan to play an up-tempo offense, with Morgan Willet and Kass Jared as the top shooters. Execution in the half-court offense is an area for improvement, Strong said.

Defensively, Timberline will try to make up for a lack of size by being a man-to-man, pressing team.

The key to the season, Strong said, is "our ability to merge as a team."

Strong was a head coach in Alaska for 10 years, winning back-to-back state titles.

"I always consider than I am helping to develop young ladies and not just basketball players," Strong said. "Building a team and developing positive working relationships is a fun part of the job."

Timberline, of Weippe, won a state 2A title in 1985.
